Can someone explain to me how a hydrogen gradient in the inter-membrane space of the mitochondria creates...?

usable energy for ATP synthase to use to make ATP? I don't understand how a hydrogen gradient creates potential energy to start off with...and I don't understand how this "energy" is used to make ATP. Thanks!
