How to thaw ground beef, did i do it wrong?

First i took it out of the freezer and left it in the bag for 30 mins it was still frozen so i put i put the bag in a plate of cold water for another 30 still frozen, so then i put it to defrost on the microwave and pieces of it got warm so i threw those out and cooked the rest
