Trying to find out the country and or style of this wooden carved oriental blanket chest?

The boats, serpent-like design, pagoda, figures, perspective etc. are all indicative of China (Canton) design but the foreground dwellings suggest Thailand or that locale. With this type of piece being heavily reproduced for many years it is difficult to ess without actually physically looking. The markings on the base are supremely important. See if you can match up in similarity the style of character, it should be easy to determine if the characters are chinese or Thai or somewhere else and if you can, then you have its origin. Usually, if original, the preferred wood to make these chests was mahogany .
